Coalition for Healthy Communities 2017 Member of the Year Award
Deb Will received the 2017 Member of the Year Award from the Coalition for Healthy Communities. The award was presented at the Coalition Board meeting on June 1.
Will chairs the Substance Abuse Task Force of the Coalition. Since 2000 she has served as the faculty advisor for Healthy YOUth (Youth Opportunities Unlimited) at ZBTHS. The organization provides leadership training for ZBTHS students who choose to be drug and alcohol-free and who want to share that commitment with the community. Since 2000, cigarette use at ZBTHS has decreased by 21% — 96% of Zee-Bees are tobacco free. Alcohol use has decreased by 18% — 78% of ZBTHS students do not regularly drink alcohol.
Will join the ZBTHS faculty in 1999 as the Instructional Media Center Coordinator.
“We are pleased to recognize Deb’s commitment to Healthy YOUth and to the Coalition,” stated Joel Brumlik, president of the Coalition. “Her dedication and enthusiasm inspire all of us.”
The Navy League of the United States sponsors awards every year recognizing the most outstanding NJROTC units in each of the 11 geographic regions of the country. From the 11 outstanding units, they also select the most outstanding unit in the nation. NJROTC units are evaluated in many areas including the annual inspection performed by the Navy, community and school service performed by cadets, academic achievement, the performance of the drill and rifle teams, and overall administration of the unit. There are over 600 schools with NJROTC competing for these awards. This year Zion-Benton was selected as the outstanding unit in Area 3 (3rd consecutive year) and also the most outstanding unit in the nation (a first for our district).
- Zion-Benton’s NJROTC program began in 1994 with 68 student cadets
- Our unit now counts over 320 cadets
- Our program has been a Distinguished unit (top 30% in the nation) for the last 20 years
- In the last eight years, 28 Z-B NJROTC graduates received college ROTC scholarships and numerous graduates enlist in all branches of the military to serve our country.
- The Z-B Rifle Team has won the Navy National Championship for three consecutive years.
- The Z-B Drill team has won the Area Three Championship for seven consecutive years.
- NJROTC cadets performed over 4500 hours of community service in the 2015/2016 school year and provided color guards at numerous community events throughout the area.
